After much deliberation, the Illest Crew is pleased to announce that the theme for this year’s Illest of Illustration show opening on Friday, October 11, 2013 is…Twisted Fairy Tales.

Derivative of stories collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, this year’s theme is about appreciating and exploring tales that allude to the unpredictable and often all-too-cruel lifestyle of central Europeans in the 1800s. Although the dark tales have been softened over time, the true heart of each continues to be enjoyed around the world today in more than 160 languages. Classics we all know and love – Cinderella, Repunzel, and Snow White – are just the beginning of the over 200 tales that are sure to inspire. With so many adaptations and interpretations out there, the possibilities for creative expression centered on this topic are limitless.

Please note that the Twisted Fairy Tales theme is only for the Poster and T-shirt design contest, decoration and costumes for the show. Details and specs for file size and format regarding each will be posted soon. Submission dates for these designs can be viewed under the “dates” tab in our main tumblr navigation tabs.

The artwork submission for the Illest of Illustration show does NOT have to reflect the Twisted Fairytales theme. Subject matter or theme of your submitted artworks will NOT effect judging.

Each participant (only RCAD’s Illustration students) can submit a maximum of 3 entries. Submissions will be digital again this year so make sure that you have a high quality digital file to turn in. We will release more details on size, resolution and other specifications as the submission date draws nearer.
DEADLINE for the submission is Thursday, September 19 by 11pm. No exceptions will be made for late entries. Any questions can be emailed to illestofillustration@gmail.com.

Hope everyone’s summer is going well! We wanted to give a short recap of the Art Market event we hosted a few weeks back.

The event went wonderful! All of the artists who had work for sale did a great job of setting up a professional display and the place looked really pulled together. We had a nice turnout of community members which of course was a result of all the hard work we put into advertising. Did you catch our commercial? (We hope you did!)

All in all the event was a good experience for most artists and for those who attended. A lot of people made a little extra money to help them through the summer and made some good contacts with potential clients.

So, in total - the 2nd Annual Art Market co-hosted by Illest of Ill and Madeby Gallery was a success!

Keep an eye on the tumblr this summer for updates and announcements about Illest of Ill 2013! We’ve got some good things in the works.

2nd Annual Art Market
Co-hosted by Illest of Ill and Madeby Gallery

The Art Market is an event that allows current students across all majors to exhibit and sell their work on campus. Though still a young tradition, the event is widely advertised and many local community supporters look forward to the opportunity to view and purchase student artwork. The market this spring will foster student professional development and peer-to-peer networking, and provide funding towards Illest of Ill 2013. More than 600 people are being invited - not to mention the general public we intend to reach through television advertisement.

All set up material — tables, hanging hardware, and black tablecloths — will be provided per booth. You may choose to sign up for a single booth for a rate of $20 or split a booth with a friend for $10 each. [Please consider the amount of work you have to display/sell and plan accordingly for whether a full or half booth would be appropriate. You may choose to sign up for a half booth and be paired with someone at random, as well.]

The price of the booth fee helps to cover the cost of various aspects of the event — equipment renting, refreshments, music, etc — and the remainder of the that fee money goes towards supporting Illest of Ill 2013.

The selling of the artwork is made possible by Madeby’s involvement with the event. Normally, when Madeby assists an artist with a sale, the commission split is 60/40. This means that 60% of the ticketed price goes to the artist and 40% goes to the gallery. [So, if you sold a painting for $100, you would get $60 and Madeby would get $40.] HOWEVER — Madeby has agreed to change the commission ratio for this special event in order to help students earn more money! The split for this event will be 80/20. [So, if you price a painting at $100, you will get $80 from the sale and Madeby will get $20.]

This year, the market will take place from 11 - 5 on Saturday April, 6.
Space permitting, setup for the sale will take place the evening prior the event — Friday April, 5.

Artists will be responsible for setting up their own artwork/display. Applicable pieces should be reading to hang — as some wall space will be available. ALL ITEMS MUST BE PROPERLY PRICED AND TAGGED. Specific details regarding that will be available a few days before the show to allow adequate preparation.

All majors are welcome to participate and set up a booth. Buyers will be looking for a variety of items, so bring everything you have! Paintings, photographs, prints, drawings, sculptures, crafts and anything else you’ve made is great! It is encouraged that you display business cards on your table so that customers can get in contact with you later if there is an interest. Please also feel free to demo, sketch, or paint while at your booth during the event. [Commission // on the spot sketches are popular.]

Students interested in participating should sign up by emailing illestofillustration@gmail.com. Student coordinators will get back to you with more information on signing your contract and paying your booth fee prior to the event.

Illest After Party

The Coffee Loft has offered to stay open late after Illestof Illustration until 1am, it is NOT only over 21- all are welcome! Growlers is open until 2am (only 21 and up) so you can hop back and forth if you want. Coffee loft is going to have tiki torches, deals on food (tbd) and they have a big lawn where people can park/hang out. Coffee loft is off of 41 by the museum!

ILLEST 2012 T-Shirt & Poster Design

Hey guys,

Welcome back! Interested in seeing your work printed on Illest T-shirt and Poster this year? Here’s a chance for you to do so! It is open to ANY MAJORS and ALL CLASSES, we’d love to see all majors participate/ we love seeing a variety of work!

ILLEST T-shirt and Poster design submissions are due next THURSDAY August 30th to illestofillustration@gmail.com by midnight.

The Poster and Tshirt designs should reflect this year’s theme ‘Jazz Age’ and must have “ILLEST OF ILLUSTRATION 2012 (or) ILLEST OF ILL 2012” written somewhere on the design. Additionally, if you are designing a poster, please put the date and location of the show in your design, and leave space to add in the names of the two guest judges.

Optional type on the design: “Jazz Age, Roaring 20’s, 7th Annual … anything related to the Illest date or place!” If you need some 20’s inspiration check out the Illest tumblr: www.illestofillustration.tumblr.com. The Tshirt designs need to strictly have 2-3 colors (not including the shirt itself), the poster designs can be multiple colors!

Size of Artwork on T-Shirt, Minimum: 13” by 19”, 300 DPI
Poster Size Minimum: 18” by 24”, 300 DPI

If your design is chosen, it will be sold at every Illest of ILL event and on opening night- your work will be everywhere!- and that’s pretty darn sweet.

The voting will take place on Friday, August 31st at 7pm in the Academic Center room 209 ***along with the announcement of the chosen artists for this year’s judging! 2-3 tshirt designs and 4-5 poster designs will be chosen!

Hello ladies and gents!

How quickly the time flies – school is about to start up again! Our fundraising events from last semester have given us a good head start on all the funds that we need to raise in order to make Illest possible. Thank you for your kind support, we really appreciate it!

After much deliberation, the Illest crew is pleased to announce that the theme for this year Illest of Illustration show on Friday, October 12, 2012 is.. (drumroll please!)

The Jazz Age! From Speakeasies and sassy dames in flapper dresses, to the Harlem Renaissance and radical dances like the Charleston, the Jazz Age known as the “Roaring Twenties” was a period of cultural revolution. Poets, musicians and artists alike were the leaders in this new age of enlightenment. We’ll take a step back in time to experience the exuberant, freewheeling popular culture of the decade!

Please note that the Jazz Age theme is only for Poster and T-shirt design contest, decoration and costumes for the show. The artwork submission for the Illest of Illustration show does NOT have to reflect the Jazz Age theme. Whether you decide to enter work with this theme or not will not affect judging.
